Pic of the day – Mythological Curiosity
I thought this was such a peculiar image. Obviously in the Greco-Roman style, in a posture often associated with Hermes and apparently carrying the famous bow of Hermes, but unstrung and without arrows, leaving whoever this is even less defended than Hermes. He flies through the air, but without Hermes’ winged sandals. He lacks other attributes of Hermes — the staff, the cap, the caduceus. So he is not Hermes. But who is he? I’m not sure. He has horns, like Pan the son of Hermes, but Pan’s horns are goatish and these are deer like. There is an Irish variant of Hermes with deer horns. Perhaps? The Green Man. Looking backwards? And tonsured?
